To have a Friday 13th coincide with a full moon is a rarity (the next won’t be along until 2049)… making it the perfect excuse for a spontaneous hill walk with a couple of friends. As it turned out it was also a tangential bimble due to more than one wrong turn as a result of chatting and not paying attention but that’s fine, it’s all part of the fun and we stumbled on a couple of places that we’d have probably never otherwise found.
I’m usually a bit os a stickler for setting up camp while it’s still light so this was challenging my comfort zone to a degree, as it happens everything was fine so by the time we found the camping spot and set up, the tent looked tent shaped, the only kit missing was my sleep mat which luckily didn’t matter because the ground was covered with lush grass which made for a comfy nest. Pitching up as the light was fading was a reminder how useful it is to do as much as possible without torch light, it really messes with your natural night vision.
Once set up for the night there were nips of of brandy, sarcastic humour and the munching of black pepper oat cakes which we all agreed make a delicious snack and are somewhat more worthy than a bag of crisps. We all slept fairly well, being tucked in my tent I was probably the warmest but the flip side was not having the canopy of stars to look at in the night.
In the morning and after mugs of tea the sun was getting hot so we carried on the long route back to town with good banter and random stops to take in the view along the way. All told it was a memorable bimble and a reminder to get out much more often.
