Ok I admit it… I’m obsessed with eating when I go out wayfaring. It’s not just about having a nice snack to graze on… it also makes sense to refuel on nutrient-dense food to provide energy for the last leg of a weary journey.
Energy Balls are great because they pack a serious punch in a conveniently small package.
All you need is a food processor and some basic ingredients. Sticky semi-dried fruits such as Dates, Figs or Prunes seem to work best because they bond everything together and bring sweetness to the party. Some people find the nuts and fruit more digestible when soaked overnight and patted dry with a clean tea towel. Almonds, Cashews, Pecans, Macadamia or Hazelnuts are all good for bulk as are pumpkin, sesame, sunflower and chia seeds. For flavouring try Vanilla, Cocoa powder, Cinnamon or Rose water. Balance the ingredients until you’re happy with the taste but go easy… this stuff is seriously filling!
Chuck everything in a food processor and blitz until the consistency is anywhere between smooth and coarse.
The resulting mixture should stick together when squeezed. Form into balls then roll in ground almonds, sesame seeds, Chia seeds or desiccated coconut to coat the sticky outer surface.
Congratulations you’re now an expert Energy Ball maker!
All that’s missing now is a mug of tea and somewhere nice to sit until the energy surge kicks in!
